Male or Female pattern baldness

Permanent hair loss from the scalp, causing baldness.

While the patterns of baldness for men and women differ, they both have a common genetic cause.
With male pattern baldness, hair loss typically occurs on the top and front of the head. With female pattern baldness, thinning occurs on the top and crown of the head. This thinning in women often starts as a widening of the centre hair part that leaves the front hairline unaffected.
Medication may prevent further hair loss. In some cases, surgeons can transplant hair or reduce the area of bald skin. Natural-looking wigs and hairpieces can help cover hair loss.

Alopecia areata

Sudden hair loss that starts with one or more circular bald patches that may overlap.

Alopecia areata occurs when the immune system attacks hair follicles and may be brought on by severe stress.
The main symptom is hair loss.
Treatment may address any underlying conditions and includes topical scalp medication.

Telogen effluvium

A reversible condition in which hair falls out after a stressful experience.

Usually self-treatable
Requires a medical diagnosis
Medium-term: resolves within months
The stress pushes large numbers of hair follicles into a resting phase. Within a few months, those hairs can fall out. Types of stress can include surgery, childbirth and serious illness.
Hair loss is the main symptom.
In many cases, no treatment is required and the hair often grows back when the stress goes away.

Anagen effluvium

An abnormal loss of hair during the first phase (anagen) of the hair’s growth cycle.

Anagen effluvium is an abnormal, rapid loss of hair. It can be caused by drugs used for cancer treatment or exposure to certain toxic chemicals.
Hair loss is the main symptom.
Growth usually begins quickly after eliminating exposure to the cause. However, textural and colour changes may occur in the new hair.
